Introduction

a.Where you are from and what do you do.
I live in Lewisburg, WV and teach 8th grade math at EGMS (Eastern Greenbrier Middle School)

b.What do you want to get out of the class.
I want to learn how to implement gaming into education.  I want to learn how to make games for my students.

c Are you a Gamer? What Games do you play? Why do you like playing games?
I am not a huge gamer.  I like games where I am up and moving (a variety of the Wii or Xbox Kinnect games).  I do like strategy word/number games on my phone, but that is about it.

d. What is your position on kids and video games? (ie time wasters, socially isolating, moral corrupting, new ways of learning, conflicted)
Games are often seen negatively, but I believe when used properly, they can offer new ways of learning and appeal to other types of learners.

e. Link to a video, podcast, online article or blog posting that is related to the effects of video games on children's learning, sociability or character development and explain why you have selected to resource.

Very interesting video having to do with boys disengagement in school today.  Sure it talks about zero-tolerance for "rough-housing" and not enough men in the schools, but at the end it discusses putting ourselves into "boy culture" such as designing better educational games in addition to changing other policies, bringing men back to the classroom. She discusses how educational gaming doesn't have the same budgeting as "World of Warcraft." Very interesting!

f. List three major world events that happen during the year you were born.
1. The Berlin Wall came down!
2. US Troops invade Panama.
3.  Earthquake Hits San Francisco An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale hit the San Francisco area. The quake killed 57 people but caused nearly $10 billion in damages.

  1. I really liked your video and its take on bringing the "boys" back into the classroom. It is interesting to notice how many students are highly interested especially boys are interested in gaming - in fact students seem to be encouraged to learn the games, research, and excel with them. Although I have to admit there are many girls I am starting to see these same areas in.

I do not think that I was born before your year?

  2. Really interesting video! Her idea of using what boys are interested in (video games) to get them engaged in school is great. Kids are so much more open to learning if it involves their interests and learning styles.

I think I was only a few years old when these events happened.

  3. Used properly, I believe games could be a great learning tool for some students.

You were born in 1989?! (Feeling older by the minute.) I was a freshman in high school. I remember it well. We had a German foreign exchange student at school. She was very sad not to be able to experience the fall in her home country.

  6. Great video. My 4 year old grandson causes me great worries. At 18 months he was talking in 4 and 5 word sentences. Just yesterday he used the word "activate" in a sentance

I remember the wall coming down, my brother was there. My nephew was born a short time later. Panama was in 89? and now we worry about Egypt and Syria!

  7. I agree with your idea for gaming and the video. Games can be used as a way to engage boys into educational ways, so that their interests can be used to help the situation.

I remember the earthquake because it happened during the world series that year.

  8. I think you were born the same year as me or the year before me?

But I agree that games, when used properly, can be a huge motivation for learning. It's interactive and fun, as opposed to the mundane pencil and paper assignments that students are so used to doing.

  9. Hi Sarah!
I agree that games are generally viewed negatively but if monitored they can provide learning experiences. Sadly this is not normally the case in my opinion but there is potential for learning to take place.
I am not sure when you were born but I am guessing 1989 based on your events. I do not remember any of the events you listed but I was alive. I would have been starting kindergarten in 1989.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  10. Sarah, I too like playing games where you are moving, such as on the Wii (Golf, tennis, skiing, Cabelas cup, hunting games), but I prefer to play these with someone else in the room because it is much more fun to me that way. I believe this is a healthy way for kids to spend time. I also agree that games can be both good and bad, and that they can offer new ways of learning in the classroom. I don't remember the events the year you were born, but I was curious what year the Berlin wall came down so I checked Wikipedia and found it was 1989! Good luck this semester!
